New Delhi: Railway minister Lalu Prasad has said that the Indian Railways will soon accept madrasa (Islamic seminary) degrees as valid for its job requirement.
“Now students of madrasas, like any educational institution, will be able to apply for jobs in the railways,” Lalu Prasad was quoted as saying by IANS news agency.“All the necessary official formalities in this regard will be finalized soon by the railways,” he added.
On 17 October last year, Mint had reported that Prasad was making an attempt to reserve jobs in the railway ministry for Muslims. He had sent a letter to the ministry of personnel seeking approval for a reservation policy for Muslims in the ministry.
A former railway official asking not to be named, said that the minister had been trying to scale up recruitment of Muslims in the ministry at various levels. “The matter had come up for discussion at the railway board on several occasions. However, it is not a subject on which the ministry can take decisions in isolation.”
