New Delhi: Almost one-fifth of the deaths of children aged under five occur because of diarrhoea. A key reason that has been identified for this is open defecation. It is therefore heartening to note that in the last decade there has been a clear advancement in the use of water closet latrines.

According to Census 2011, barring Orissa, more than one in five households in the country now have such a facility.
