MUMBAI: The Centre today promised full support to the IT industry in their demand for extension of Software Technology Parks of India scheme ,reviving hopes of small and medium companies in the IT space.

“I am a supporter of the industry. The industry should stand united. I am with you," Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran said at the inauguration of the NASSCOM India Leadership Forum here.

In response, NASSCOM Chairman B Ramalinga Raju said the representative body of the IT industry is united in its demand for the extension of STPI Scheme for another 10 years beyond 2009.

“If we do not extend the STPI, it would be a great injustice to the industry and the small and medium players," Raju said.

The STPI scheme has played an important role in catalysing the growth of the Indian IT industry. The scheme provides plenty of incentives to promote software export-oriented businesses and has proved successful in developing the industry in major urban centres like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune.

However, the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) model, being promoted in a big way by the government, has put a question mark over the scheme, set to end in 2009.

“The industry has to take it up together...I have been writing to the Finance Minister and Prime Minister about the issue. We want it to happen," Maran said.
