Washington: Arizona Senator John McCain won the Missouri presidential primaries Tuesday after a tight race taking all the 58 delegates up for grabs in the state, US media said.
McCain fended off a tough challenge from ordained Baptist preacher Mike Huckabee to win the state and add to his string of ‘Super Tuesday’ victories, Fox and CBS networks said.
McCain told supporters he was looking forward to winning the Republican Party nomination for November’s presidential elections.
“I think we must get used to the idea that we are the Republican Party front-runner for the nomination for president,” McCain told cheering crowds.
“We’ve won a number of important victories in the closest thing we’ve ever had to a national primary,” he said, after wins were projected for him in states including New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Arizona.
