Mumbai: In an indication that faction fights continue to bleed the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) after the party’s worst-ever civic poll performance in the city, senior leader Gurudas Kamat has demanded an open discussion of the party’s campaign strategy.

In a letter to MRCC president Sanjay Nirupam released to the media, Kamat called for an executive meeting which could either be “closed door or in a big hall or even an open ground in front of party workers so that Congress workers are able to make up their mind rather than getting confused".

Kamat, a former MRCC president himself who has been sparring with Nirupam ever since the latter was made Mumbai Congress chief, said the meeting should discuss in detail all aspects of the recently concluded BMC polls in the backdrop of the “disastrous results." The former MP also asked Nirupam to fix responsibility instead of briefing media and Congress leadership “utter falsehoods."

Kamat has also suggested inviting All India Congress Committee general secretary and Maharashtra in-charge Mohan Prakash to this meeting.

In the BMC polls, the Congress won only 31 of the total 227 seats, 21 less than its 2012 tally. Soon after the results came out, Nirupam said he had sent his resignation to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) “owning up the moral responsibility of the loss". The AICC has not taken a decision on Nirupam’s resignation.

Nirupam had also blamed “certain Mumbai Congress leaders who in their desire to see him fail had actually worked against the party itself". Nirupam had demanded action against these leaders. Without naming any leader, Nirupam had said that several Mumbai Congress functionaries did not take part in campaign meetings or demonstrations against the BJP government’s policies like demonetisation.

After the hung verdict, Kamat had also reacted sharply to speculation that the Congress may extend formal or informal support to Shiv Sena which has won 84 seats to ensure victory for the latter’s nominee in the mayoral poll. Hinting that it was Nirupam’s camp which was fueling this speculation, Kamat had said he objected to the very “idea of Congress party talking to Shiv Sena and BJP" and that he had conveyed his stand to the AICC. On his part, Nirupam had categorically denied supporting Shiv Sena and BJP.
