New Delhi: Over 1.5 lakh posts are lying vacant in Indian Railways, which is one of the biggest employers in the world, Lok Sabha was informed on 6 September 2007.

Minister of state for Railways R Velu informed this to the House in a written statement.

Northern Railway, with 17,118 vacancies, tops the list among the 16 railway zones and is followed by East Central Railway (14,227), Central Railway (13,274) and Eastern Railway (13,153), he said. The total number of vacant posts is 1,57,677.

“No extra burden is being enforced on the existing staff thereby compromising with safety standards," the minister said.

Railways are establishing a captive power plant of 1000 MW capacity at Nabinagar, in Bihar’s Aurangabad district, in collaboration with National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Velu said in reply to another question.

Replying to a separate question, Velu said upgradation of security is being undertaken at 185 railway stations across the country that have been identified as sensitive.

Among the security measures being undertaken are closure of unauthorised entry and exit points, installation of close circuit television and cameras, deployment of trained staff to monitor suspicious movement of people, he said.
