Violence in Bengal’s South 24 Parganas over acquired land
Villagers clashed with police over a 13-acre plot forcibly acquired years ago for a power substation at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district
Kolkata: Villagers and the police on Tuesday clashed over a 13-acre plot forcibly acquired years ago for a power substation at Bhangar in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, forcing the state administration to eventually beat a retreat and announce that the project has been abandoned.
Villagers alleged that one person was shot though the police denied opening fire. Several policemen were injured in the skirmish and many police vehicles were vandalised.
The state’s power minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay said the protests against the project were meaningless because the project had already been shelved.
