New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday granted justice C.S. Karnan, sitting judge of Calcutta High Court, four weeks to make his stand clear in a contempt of court case against him.

“Please tell us if you are tendering an unqualified apology or if you are reaffirming your statements," the seven-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) J.S. Khehar asked Karnan.

The court had taken suo motu cognizance of Karnan’s alleged misconduct while he was serving as a judge in the Madras high court. He was subsequently transferred to the Calcutta high court.

“Your lordships have failed to protect my dignity. By sending police to a constitutional office, you have insulted not only me but the institution I am part of," Karnan said.

Karnan had written to various dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CJI, the Union law minister and various sitting judges across high courts, alleging corruption against several sitting and retired judges in the country.

Justice Karnan made repeated requests to restore his judicial and administrative work in the high court.

The apex court had barred Karnan from discharging his duties as a high court judge and issued bailable arrest warrant against him.

The case will be heard next on 8 May.
