Economy and Politics | Plan panel proposes tax on rice exports
New Delhi: The Planning Commission has proposed a tax on exports of rice, member Abhijit Sen told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The country should increase the stockpile of rice and wheat to 25-30 million tonnes (mt) from 14 mt currently, Sen said.
Sen added that the country’s rice production may exceed 100 mt in the year beginning 1 July if monsoon rains are normal.
Addressing the reporters, Sen also said that food inflation is expected to decline to 4-5% by November from the current over 16% after the arrival of kharif crops.

India protests denial of visa to ex-IB official
New Delhi: After a fresh case of Canada denying a visa to a retired intelligence officer, India on Wednesday summoned the Canadian high commissioner and lodged a strong protest.
“We had written a strong-worded letter to the ministry of external affairs, which then summoned the high commissioner," a senior home ministry official said. “They have to change their attitude or else we will retaliate strongly with similar actions. They must apologize and take a strict action against their immigration officers."
S.S. Sidhu, former deputy director in intelligence bureau, was denied a visa on grounds of “engaging in terrorism", “being a danger to the security of Canada" and other similar charges.
This came three days after a retired Border Security Force constable Fateh Singh Pandher was denied visa by the Canadian immigration authorities saying that he belonged to a “violent" and “notorious" force involved in killing of people in Kashmir.
