New Delhi: Turkey saw the highest growth in air traffic in terms of plane departures in the 2005-14 period, clocking a 397% increase, World Bank data showed.

A total of 723,207 flights took off in Turkey in 2014, against 145,952 in 2005.

In China, departures grew 148% from just over 1.3 million in 2005 to 3.3 million in 2014, next only to the US, which heads the 2014 departures list.

In 2014, the US, with its large network of airports saw over 9.53 million departures (both domestic and international). That still is a marginal decline of 4.2% from a decade ago, when it saw over 9.96 million departures.

Canada with over 1.2 million departures is ranked third for 2014, followed by the UK (1,069,420), Brazil (937,437), Japan (927,437), Germany (913,156), Russia (747,804) and Turkey (723,207). India, with 720,050 flights in 2014 is ranked tenth globally.

India is also among the fastest growing countries for air travel, with a 117% increase in departures since 2005, when it saw 330,484 departures. Since then, India has leapfrogged countries like Australia, Mexico, Spain and Italy to break into the top ten. The number of departures from Indian airports grew significantly between 2005 (330,484 departures) to 2009 (601,977)—an increase of over 82%. In the next five years, air travel in India, according to the data, showed slower growth of 15.55%.

Besides India, countries like Brazil, Indonesia and Turkey have also shown faster growth over the last decade. Brazil, which hosted the 2014 World Cup, saw nearly a million departures from its airports last year. In 2005, nearly 514,700 flights took off from Brazil’s airports. That number increased by 82% in 2014, with 937,437 departures. Indonesia, with better connectivity across its tourist destinations, saw departures from its airports spike by 119% between 2005 and 2014.

According to aviation industry reports, over 100,000 flights take off from various destinations globally on a daily basis.
