NEW DELHI: The current high inflation in food prices will come down after some time, finance minister P. Chidambaram told reporters here.
The minister said sugar prices had already come down by Rs2 a kg due to bumper output, while wheat prices had started to stabilize. With the arrival of new wheat in the market, prices are expected to come down further. “The government will take steps as and when required,” he added.
The government has cut import duties on several food and manufactured products, and tightened credit to commercial real estate to curb inflation, which touched 6.11% in the week ended 20 January.
