New Delhi: Stepping into the controversy surrounding the electronic voting machine, or EVM, Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, general secretary Prakash Karat on Tuesday urged the Election Commission (EC) to remove all doubts regarding the use of EVMs for voting, “so that people’s faith in the democratic system is not affected”.
In a letter to chief election commissioner Navin Chawla, Karat said several questions about the reliability of EVMs had been raised in recent times, including the possibility of tampering with the programme chip embedded in the machines. He said some countries with the requisite technological know-how had stopped using the EVMs.
“The Election Commission should take steps to clear all the doubts and allay the apprehensions,” Karat said, adding that the commission should convene an all-party meet, along with technical experts, to discuss the issue.
