New Delhi: In a bid to pre-empt any further industrial action, similar to what was attempted by workers of state-owned oil companies, the government has called an inter-ministerial meeting on Thursday to discuss employee remuneration.

The meeting will be chaired by home minister P. Chidambaram and will be attended by petroleum minister Murli Deora and power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde along with senior bureaucrats.

A three-day strike by officers of oil companies this month triggered nation wide shortages of petroleum products such as petrol and diesel. It could have become worse if officers of NTPC Ltd, Bharat Heavy Electricials Ltd and NHPC Ltd, among others, had joined it. The ministries of power and petroleum and natural gas together account for the single largest chunk of public sector employees.

The striking employees were demanding full implementation of the MJ Rao Committee’s recommendations; the pay revisions notified earlier were lower than those recommended by the committee.

“This is a just demand by the (public sector) officers and should be honoured by the government. While the bureaucrats got more than what was recommended for them, why this discrimination in the case of PSUs (public sector undertakings)," said a top official at a PSU.
