Hyderabad: The government in Andhra Pradesh has challenged in the high court a 24 December order of the National Environmental Appellate Authority (NEAA), which revoked the environmental clearance given to multi-purpose Polavaram dam. The dam is located in the northern part of the state. The government, in its writ petition, said NEAA went beyond its jurisdiction and authority in cancelling the clearance given to the project. It said any delay in execution of the Rs9,000 crore project would lead to cost escalation and put burden on the exchequer. A division bench heard the arguments inconclusively on Thursday. NEAA had maintained that the project was cleared without giving an adequate hearing to all the people likely to be displaced.
