Imphal: Manipur government has decided to set up a new medical college at the JN Hospital complex in Imphal East district, according to official sources.
The decision to establish the medical college was taken during a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on 19 April.
As the present academic session was underway, the new medical college would start functioning from next academic session. All necessary steps including acquisition of more land around the hospital complex are being taken up on a war footing.
Sources said the upgradation of the present Regional Insitute of Medical Science and Hospital (RIMSH) at the level of the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) by the Centre had prompted the state government to set up this new college.
Sources said hospital beds at the JN Hospital would also be increased from present 300 to 500 beds besides strengthening infrastructure as the college will have its laboratory at the same hospital.
