New Delhi: The Women’s Reservation Bill, which would reserve 33% of national and state legislature seats for women, has stirred up a storm of controversy in the last few days, most recently resulting in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calling for an all-party meet to discuss the matter.
The bill has been stalled for fourteen years now, with critics demanding reservation within reservation and advocates stating that the passage of the bill is a crucial step towards more equal political participation.
While the Congress, the BJP and the Left are all in favour of the bill, is reserving 33% of legislature seats for women in fact a good idea? Mint’s deputy managing editor, Anil Pamanbhan, talks to two of the paper’s political correspondents to get their views about the bill and how, if passed, it would play out.
