New Delhi: A sample survey of Budget expectations of senior citizens carried out by non-government organization HelpAge India showed a majority of respondents felt inflation had negatively impacted them over the last year, and that the government did not do anything to combat it.
“We have made a representation to the finance minister for higher exemption to the children who support their older parents. This is needed as there are virtually no institutional support systems for older persons in the lower- and middle-income groups and children are their only support system,” a HelpAge press release quoted Mathew Cherian, its chief executive.
In the wake of inflation, the lower- and middle-income groups have been hit the hardest, the survey said.
