Law panel asks political parties for views on uniform code
The law panel's chairperson, B.S. Chauhan, has sought the views of political parties as 'political parties are the backbone of any successful democracy'
New Delhi: The Law Commission of India has asked political parties to offer their suggestions and comments on the contentious uniform civil code issue.
The law panel’s chairperson, B.S. Chauhan, has written to Amit Shah of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress party’s Sonia Gandhi, and Asaduddin Owaisi of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, among others, seeking their opinion. The development was first reported by the Economic Times on Monday.
The chairperson has sought the views of political parties as “political parties are the backbone of any successful democracy, (and) their opinion...is very important," according to a PTI report.
The parties have been asked to send their comments on the issue by 21 November. A copy of the questionnaire released by the commission on 7 October was attached with the letter. The move to separately approach political parties comes at a time when there has been an outcry from some religious groups, like the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), about the one-sided nature of the law panel’s questionnaire.
The Commission released its appeal seeking comments from the public and other stakeholders on 7 October. The AIMPLB, on 13 October, declared that it would boycott and reject the questionnaire and that it wanted no change in Muslim personal law.
The law ministry in July asked the law panel to file a detailed report on issues related to uniform civil code, which was one of BJP’s electoral promises in 2014.
