Mangaluru: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday reiterated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) dream of making Karnataka a Congress-mukt state in the assembly elections due later this year.

Addressing the Karnataka Suraksha Yatre, dubbed Hindutva yatre, Adityanath said that chief minister Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka was anti-farmer and anti-Hindu.

He said that anti-social elements were emboldened by the Congress government in the state which has led to the targeting and killing of people associated with Right wing organisations. He also said that even UP had waived off farm loans without the Centre’s support.

The rally in Mangaluru was the culmination of a four-day Hindutva padayatre that started in two places—Ankola and Kodagu—and travelled towards the Dakshina Kannada district—about 350 kms from Bengaluru.

The BJP, which has tried different caste combinations in other parts of the state, is trying to consolidate the fragmented Hindu vote in coastal Karnataka.

The rally was led by Shobha Karandlaje, Anantkumar Hegde, Naleen Kateel and Pratap Simha—four of loudest Hindutva voices from the state.

The BJP highlighted the alleged targeted attacks and killings of people associated with Right wing groups. The BJP claims that over 23 people associated with the Sangh Parivaar have been killed since 2015. The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government has denied this accusation.

The families of those killed in such incidents were present at all of the events organised in the course of the rally.

Leaders of the BJP took turns to make provocative speeches targeting Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah and the Congress party.

The party has decided that the rally will now head towards Bengaluru, the seat of power, to challenge the Congress in the run up to the assembly elections.
