New Delhi: Finance minister Arun Jaitley allocated ₹ 19,000 crore for the rural roads programme under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana for rural development, while presenting the Union budget on Monday.
“Together with the contribution of the states, we will be spending ₹ 27,000 crore (on rural roads) in 2016-17," Jaitley said.
In all, 230,000km of roads have been constructed so far since the programme was launched in 2000, the minister said.
The aim of the project is to connect the 65,000 villages and habitations still unconnected by roads, he said.
