BJP ups attack on Congress, says absence of leadership

New Delhi: The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday escalated its attack on the Union government, claiming an absence of leadership in the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

The latest charge came a day after a finance ministry note surfaced that suggested P. Chidambaram, now home minister, could have but did not prevent the allocation of second-generation (2G) telecom spectrum when he was finance minister. The note was sent to the Prime Minister’s Office in March.

“There have been very few situations in the past when the credibility of the government has been so low... The biggest worry in the current political situation of the country is the state of governance and administration," leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, said at ZZZ. Corruption is driving away investors from the country, he said.

Referring to a range of alleged scams including the 2G spectrum, the Commonwealth Games and the cash-for-votes cases, the BJP leader said the Congress’ leadership seemed to be faltering and weak.

“On the one hand, there is a lack of trust from the public in the government, and on the other hand, there is complete lack of trust within the government," Jaitley said, adding that the Congress’ main leaders were mute spectators. “Forget about a party, the Congress does not even appear to be a coalition," he said.

Jaitely accused the government of subverting the federal character of the country and said the proposed goods and services tax wasn’t coming through because state governments did not “trust" the UPA.

Referring to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s official visit to Bangladesh earlier this month that ended without an agreement on sharing Teeta river water following objections from West Bengal chief minister and UPA ally Mamata Banerjee, Jaitely said “the internal politics of the UPA had adversely affected India’s foreign policy".

The Congress dismissed Jaitley’s charges as “baseless".

“The people of this country have complete trust in the government and in our party also... BJP leadership is facing an internal crisis; it is better for them to find out a solution to their problem instead of attacking us," Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi said. “Congress party is united and is one.
