New Delhi: Be ready to pay up to Rs300 to policemen in the national capital if you have still not removed pressure horns or multi-toned horns from your vehicles.

Delhi Police is launching a drive from this New Year to punish those using horns indiscriminately while driving to ensure a noise-pollution free city.

Blowing horns unnecessarily in silence zones, at signalled junctions, using multi-toned horns and pressure horns aided by engine pressure are illegal, the official said.

This attracts a fine which extends upto 100 for the first offence and for any second or subsequent offence with a fine of upto Rs300.

With unnecessary honking becoming a menace for Delhi and other metropolitans, an NGO Earth Saviours Foundation in collaboration with the Delhi Traffic Police is observing New Year day as a “no honking day".

According to the Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules of 1993, no driver shall sound the horn or other devices for giving audible warning or shall cause or allow any other person to do so continuously or to an extent beyond what is necessary to ensure safety.

It further states that except to avoid an imminent accident, no person shall sound the horn or other audible warning device within the limits of a stand, parking place or cab rank.

Honking unnecessarily at intersections, silence zones, hospitals and schools are all liable for prosecution but the rules are not implemented properly due to limited manpower and other pressing traffic problems.

“The rules against honking are not properly observed and implemented as we have many other more serious traffic violations to deal with and large manpower constraint," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S N Shrivastav.
