New Delhi: Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT BHU) will soon join the league of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT).
The ministry of human resource development, which oversees education, is in the process of preparing a cabinet note to facilitate the upgrade of the institute into an IIT, a senior official at the ministry said.
“The note is being prepared with details on its executive council and other institutional structures and functions. It will be sent to the cabinet soon,’’ the official told Mint.
Since 2000, IT-BHU, currently part of the Benaras Hindu University in Benaras, has been in the process of upgrading itself into an IIT. The admission for students to the institute is already done through the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (IIT JEE), which selects students for all the 13 existing IITs, every year.
The upgrade is expected to improve the infrastructure and academic standard of the institute.
Seven other institutes including the Bengal Engineering College; Howrah, Cochin University of Science and Technology; Kochi, Engineering and Technology Department of Jadavpur University and Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology; Aligarh Muslim University apart from IT BHU are being considered for the IIT brigade.
