New Delhi: Agri cooperative major Nafed has decided to take help of professional surveyors to the test quality of crops before buying them at the support price due to strictures from the CAG on earlier occasions.
Special attention needs to paid to ensure that only the farmer’s produce conforming to prescribed quality parameters be procured to avoid criticism from CAG, managing director of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation U K S Chauhan said at a meeting of state agencies here last week.
He was addressing a meeting on preparedness for procurement of Rabi oilseeds and pulses, which start arriving in mandis from mid-March.
Nafed would engage professional surveyors to test the quality of crop before accepting the same at the godowns, he said, adding the system was introduced last year in copra purchase.
The surveyors are already empanelled and their services will be sought if Nafed undertakes the operation under price support scheme (PSS), he said.
Nafed is the Centre’s nodal agency to procure oilseeds and pulses at the minimum support price (MSPs) if their market prices go down below the benchmark levels and the government pays the differences to the cooperative for disposing off the stocks.
