Swabhiman rally to counter Parivartan rally in Bihar

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who was so far reluctant to share stage with alliance partner Lalu Prasad, has decided to hold a joint JD(U)-RJD rally in Patna during the weekend to counter PM Narendra Modi’s scheduled Parivartan rally in Bhagalpur. The PM is expected to announce a special package for Bihar at his rally. The Kumar-Yadav Swabhiman rally will play the “Bihari pride" card and tell people how Modi “insulted Bihar" with his “DNA jibe" at the CM and also by calling the state “Bimaru".

Billed as a show of strength for the “secular" formation, the Swabhiman rally will be addressed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Kumar and RJD chief Lalu Prasad. This would be for the first time that Gandhi will share stage with Kumar.

Meanwhile, Lalu Prasad said Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will also attend the joint rally of the JD-U, RJD, Congress and NCP in Patna.

Rahul Gandhi to visit J&K

Even as the NSA-level talks between India and Pakistan have collapsed over Islamabad’s insistence on meeting Hurriyat leaders prior to a bilateral engagement, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will pay a three-day visit to shelling-hit border areas in Jammu and Kashmir, starting 26 August. Rahul is expected to travel to all the three regions of the state—Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and interact with people. He is also expected to discuss the state of affairs in the Congress with senior leaders and workers.

Seychelles president’s Indian visit

President of the Seychelles James Alix Michel will arrive in New Delhi on 25 August on a three-day visit during which he will hold talks with the top Indian leadership to explore ways to ramp up bilateral ties. It was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 34 years.

Key US data this week

The US commerce department will publish its second estimate on the second quarter growth figures on Thursday. Market analysts expect the data to show that the economy grew 3.2% in the three months ended 30 June, up from a preliminary estimate of 2.3%, as an improvement in consumer spending and housing offset the drag from the energy sector. The US is also set to release data on durable goods orders on Wednesday, as investors look for fresh readings on the strength of the economy.

State assembly sessions

The Tamil Nadu assembly session will be held between 24 August and 29 September, it was tentatively decided on 21 August by the Business Advisory Committee.
