New Delhi: The Central government Thursday approved Rs1,200 crore for upgradation of roads in Naxal-affected areas of Orissa such as Sambalpur, Kandhmal and Mayurbhanj districts.

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI) has approved upgradation of 600 km long state roads on Vijaywada-Ranchi corridor.

“The CCI today approved taking up of improvement of balance 600 km of state roads in Orissa with a view to develop the entire 1,632 km long left-wing extremism affected Vijaywada-Ranchi corridor in a phased manner," an official statement said.

The project will also provide a communication network between the tribal districts of the state and other developed areas in Orissa as well as to the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, it added.

The other districts, which will be covered under the project are Malkangiri, Jaypore, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Boudh, Angul, Deogarh and Koenjhar.

Besides improving the social and economic status of the tribal people, the route will provide an efficient communication network in the remote areas to combat the extremists’ activities in the border tribal districts of the state, the statement said.
