Owning pets (or having them own you whichever the case may be) is definitely one of life’s more rewarding experiences. But the responsibilities you take on when you make the decision to adopt a kitten or a puppy are often daunting, and as a lot of expatriates have learned, differ from country to country.
In Delhi in particular, owning pets can be a very different experience. The practice of owning pets is not all that common in the city where most people live in apartment blocks. Good veterinarians are hard to come by and landlords don’t look too kindly on the process.
Also there are all the things you have to think about before you adopt. How long will you be in the country? What happens to the animal when you want to travel? Melissa who by her own admission rushed into adopting two cats without really thinking about the consequences, talks to Aruna about some of the most important things she has learned about owning pets in Delhi.
