Ahmedabad: Roses from Gujarat are in full bloom in the Japanese market, as more and more farmers are switching to floriculture as an alternate to traditional farming in Vyara taluka at Surat.
About 70% of the total rose produce in Surat from the projected 100 hectares of land is being exported to Japan. The total exports of roses last year was 35 lakh stems, an official with the state Horticulture Department said.
Rose exports from Surat is on an upswing following increase in floriculture acreage under hi-tech green house farming here, the official said.
“The floriculture acreage under hi-tech green house rose farming in Surat has shot upto 100 hectares from initial 40.5 hectares in last five years,” joint director of the State Horticulture Department P.M. Vaghasiya said.
