New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet in a Delhi court in a bribery case allegedly involving Syndicate Bank’s suspended chairman and managing director (CMD) S.K. Jain, Bhushan Steel Ltd vice chairman and managing director Neeraj Singal and others. The chargesheet was filed before special CBI judge Gurdeep Singh who directed the probe agency to file all relevant documents by 12 October.

“Investigating officer seeks some time to file documents, as they are voluminous. Put up for filing of documents on 12 October," the court said. The court had in September last year granted bail to all the accused, including Jain and Singal, after the CBI failed to file the chargesheet against them within the stipulated period of 60 days. Apart from Jain and Singal, the CBI had earlier arrested Arun Aggarwal, Puneet Godha, Vineet Godha, Pankaj Kumar Tiwari, Purushottam Lal Totlani and Vijay Pahuja in connection with the case.

The CBI had registered two separate graft cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for the offence of criminal conspiracy. In August last year, CBI had arrested some of the accused in connection with the case and claimed to have recovered 21 lakh in cash from Jain’s residence besides gold worth 1.68 crore and fixed deposit documents of up to 63 lakh. The agency has filed two cases against Jain, accusing him of receiving a bribe of 50 lakh through conduits and abusing his official position to enhance the credit limits of some companies in violation of laid-down procedures.
