New Delhi: India’s IT capital Bengaluru and parts of southern interior Karnataka and northwestern interior Tamil Nadu are expected to receive moderate rains until Thursday at least as cyclone Vardah passes through the state on Tuesday, a day wreaking havoc in Chennai.

The intensity of the rains will lessen as Vardah moves to Goa. Bengaluru recorded 60.88 mm of continuous rainfall since Monday evening causing trees to be uprooted and water-logging reported in a few low-lying areas of the city. Heavy rains lashed Andhra Pradesh as well.

The cyclone Vardah has claimed at least eight lives so far in coastal Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. It hit coastal Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on Monday which saw wind speeds in excess of 100kmph with a maximum of 192km followed by heavy rainfall, leaving many regions underwater, disrupting power supply, suspending train services and affecting flight services. Vardah has left a trail of destruction in Chennai akin to the devastating foods of December 2015.

Here are the highlights:

18 people killed in rain-related incidents during cyclone Vardah in Tamil Nadu, reports PTI.

Internet and broadband subscribers of Airtel may experience slower speed in the country as one of undersea cable of the company has been hit by the cyclone in Chennai. “Due to the severe cyclone at Chennai coast yesterday, one of our international undersea cables has been damaged and Internet traffic has been partially impacted. As a result, customers in some locations may be experiencing slow internet/data speeds," an Airtel spokesperson has said.

Cyclone ‘Vardah’ has hit the currency supply to banks and ATMs in Chennai, aggravating the post-demonetisation woes of people already reeling under a severe cash crunch. While several banks and ATMs are providing cash far below the allowed limit every now and then due to cash shortage, the damage caused by the cyclone has dealt a further blow with movement of cash vehicles coming to a grinding halt, resulting in empty ATMs. Also, ATMs could not be used to access other services like cheques or cash deposit as electricity supply is yet to be restored in several localities due to fallen trees, snapping power cables

Cyclone Vardah has caused destruction worth up to $1 billion to the industries, said industry body Assocham, as reported in Business Standard.

Flight services at Chennai airport have resumed as cyclone-hit Chennai limps back to normal.

Tamil Nadu’s state disaster management cell reports that Chennai’s Anna Salai, Kamarajar Salai, Poonamallee High road, Rajaji Salai, RK Salai, Sardar Patel Road and Lalbahadur Sastri Road have been cleared of fallen trees.

NDMA: “Expect Heavy Rains over north interior Tamil Nadu, adjoining south Karnataka and north Kerala for next 12 hours," tweeted.

The meteorological department (Bengaluru) said that no warnings have been issued in the state as it is only experiencing moderate rains and winds which will subside gradually till Thursday.

Heavy rains is likely to continue over southern coastal Andhra Pradesh, northern coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, Chennai.

Normal flight services have resumed from Bengaluru to Chennai, according to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) officials. KIA has reported at least eight departures from Bengaluru to Chennai since Tuesday morning. The first departure from Chennai to Bengaluru took off at 10.20am. Bengaluru airport has had no disruptions in operations, according to KIA officials.
