New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), said on Saturday that on “the basis of legal advice" the agency had “decided to file one more case of perjury in the coal scam case" alleging “malicious, deliberate and intentional false statements made in a sworn affidavit before the Supreme Court".

On Friday the agency had filed a case of perjury pertaining to the 2G telecom spectrum scam case after lawyer Prashant Bhushan alleged that CBI director Ranjit Sinha had influenced investigations favouring certain corporates that were being probed.

Sinha has denied these allegations.

Scandals related to the 2008 allocation of 2G telecom spectrum, and the allocation of coal blocks haunted the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in its second term in office, and contributed to the coalition’s rout in this year’s general election. Probes into both are being monitored by the Supreme Court.

In February 2012, the Supreme Court cancelled all 122 2G spectrum licences that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) estimated had cost the national exchequer a notional loss of 1.76 trillion.

On 25 August, the Supreme Court declared the allocations of all coal blocks from as far back as 1993 and until 2010 as illegal, but stopped short of cancelling them. The CAG had estimated the notional loss to the exchequer in those allocations at 1.86 trillion.

The Supreme Court will hear the 2G case and the coal allocation case next on 8 and 9 September, respectively.
