Mumbai: Government is not considering a change in diesel prices, the country’s petroleum secretary said on Wednesday, ahead of a meeting of the empowered group of ministers (EGOM) on Thursday.
“We are conscious of under-recoveries for oil companies. We are keen to take prices as close to international prices as possible. But this item is not on the agenda for the EGOM meeting on Thursday,” petroleum secretary G.C. Chaturvedi said.
The government sets prices for diesel and cooking gas, but petrol is freely priced.
Raising prices could help shore up the bottom line of state-run oil firms and help the government curb its huge subsidy burden, but would stoke already-high inflation and anger voters.
