New Delhi: India’s annual monsoon rains are gathering strength and should reach Mumbai in two days after their movement to the western region from the south was delayed by a lack of strong winds, a weather department official said.

“The monsoon is getting strengthened on the west coast," the Pune-based official of the India Meteorological Department told Reuters on 12 June. He said the monsoon flow has come towards the western state of Maharashtra.

“We are getting some monsoon clouds over Pune but no rains, it will take a couple of days to move to Mumbai," he said.

The monsoon is expected to cross into Maharashtra by last weekend after an Arabian Sea cyclone that had held it up faded away, but later other weather conditions turned unfavourable.

The June-September monsoon is vital to the health of India’s trillion dollar economy as it determines farm output and subsequent rural demand for a range of products.
