Dallas: Airline accidents worldwide rose 9% in 2008, while the number of fatalities declined 27% , the International Air Transport Association said.

Last year’s accident tally was 109, up from 100 in 2007, the trade group said on Thursday in a statement. The number of fatal accidents increased to 23 from 20, and the death toll was 502.

The trade group measures the accident rate as the loss of a hull, or fuselage, for each million flight-miles by Western- built jets.

By that gauge, the 2008 rate rose to 1 accident for each 1.2 million flights, from 1 in 1.3 million a year earlier, IATA said.

Safety is the industry’s No. 1 priority, IATA chief executive officer Giovanni Bisignani said in the statement.

DGCA to hire experts for airports, flights safety

New Delhi: The directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) will hire experts from abroad to strengthen safety at airports and flights. These experts will help the DGCA to augment its existing strength in discharging regulatory and safety-related functions.

“International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has offered to run national projects in the areas of flight safety, aerodromes and air navigation services..." minister of state for civil aviation Praful Patel told the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
