New Delhi: The Budget session of Parliament begins on Monday as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) readies to present its last full budget on 1 February before its five-year term ends.

The upcoming budget is significant because the ruling NDA will go into poll mode in 14 months as general elections are scheduled for early next year. The first day of the Budget session will witness a joint address by President Ram Nath Kovind in Parliament, followed by the presentation of the Economic Survey in the afternoon.

Also, the parliamentary party executive of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold a meeting on Monday, followed by another meeting of NDA allies to discuss the strategy for the session.

The Budget session is expected to witness a tussle between the government and opposition parties led by Congress. The opposition is also planning to hold a meeting later on Monday to finalise their strategy in Parliament.

“We are hopeful that the upcoming session will be a productive one. Opposition raised some concerns during the all party meeting on Sunday and so we expect that there will be disruption on a few issues," a senior leader of the NDA said, requesting anonymity.

Opposition parties are planning to corner the government on the issues of unemployment, price rise, rural distress and atrocities on Dalits.

The first phase of the Budget session will end on 9 February. After a recess, the session will reconvene from 5 March to 6 April.
