New Delhi: In a post-demonetisation crackdown by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), cash amounting to more than Rs29 crore and 135 kilograms of gold was detected and passed on to the income-tax department.

According to figures provided by the CISF, while Mumbai airport reported the highest detection and seizure, with Rs12.56 crore of old notes and 67.5 kilos of gold being seized, Delhi came a close second with the CISF seizing Rs6.2 crore and gold amounting to 15 kilos. CISF found and seized Rs4.32 crore and 38 kilos of gold from the other, smaller airports.

The CISF, which guards all airports across the nation, began conducting checks across all arrival and departure terminals after the government on 8 November banned old Rs500 and Rs1,000 bank notes.

“This bulk movement of cash started happening because people immediately wanted to dispose of their old cash. And that is when we started conducting random checks. This drive will continue so that we can crack down on movement of illegal currency," said O.P. Singh, director general of CISF.
