New Delhi: The government would set up 20 IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology) in various parts of the country in close collaboration with industry associations for which the Planning Commission has already made a provision of Rs100 crore.

Rajeeva Ratna Shah, member secretary, Planning Commission on Thursday disclosed that the government would ensure broadband accessibility to almost every citizen in the countryside, covering 97% of its geographical area latest by 2012.

Two policy decisions were approved by the National Development Council (NDC) at its full-fledged meeting concluded under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh.

He clarified that relevant industry associations would have to come forward with a blueprint for proposed IIITs and that the government would not encourage any particular industrial house to take initiatives for setting these up.

The industry associations would have a clear cut vision for institutions which would be entitled to receive a part of the allocations out of Rs100 crore in which education would be imparted for skill content relating to nano IT/computing content, bio-IT/computing content, information security, telemedicine, telebanking and finance.

Industry associations would also spend a substantial sum on opening up of such institutions, clarified the Member Secretary.

Elaborating further on broadband accessibility particularly in rural India, Shah said that during 11th five year plan period, broadband revolution will ride on wings of entertainment through out the country.
