Sex ratio improves in 18 districts of Haryana: Anil Vij

Chandigarh: Haryana health minister Anil Vij on Friday claimed there has been a considerable improvement in the sex ratio in 18 districts of the state due to the awareness and intensive inspection campaigns being run under the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao programme. Sex ratio in 12 districts has crossed the 900-mark and in six districts is between 875 and 900 girls per 1,000 boys. Sirsa has registered the highest sex ratio at 926 girls per 1,000 boys, Vij said.

He said that the health department had intensified its campaign to curb illegal centres and doctors involved in sex determination throughout the state. As many as 24,947 inspections were conducted and registration of 613 centres has been suspended or cancelled, whereas 448 centres were sealed and first information reports (FIRs) were lodged in 185 cases, he said.

Vij said that apart from this, 68 persons including 44 doctors have been convicted, and charges have been framed by the court against 18 doctors. The state Medical Council had suspended 14 licences after conviction by the court and six licences after charges framed by the court.

1,733 meetings of the district advisory committee and 254 of district task force were held till November 2016, he said. The minister said that as a result of these efforts sex ratio in Panchkula stood at 924, Fatehabad and Palwal at 917, Karnal at 915, Hisar at 914, Panipat at 913 and Ambala at 910, Vij said.

Sex ratio in Mewat was at 909 girls per 1,000 boys, 903 in Sonipat, 901 in Rohtak and 900 girls per 1,000 boys in Jind. Besides, sex ratio in Yamunanagar and Bhiwani is at 894 girls per 1,000 boys, in Kaithal it is at 893, 891 in Faridabad and Gurgaon. Jhajjar’s sex ratio stood at 879 girls per 1,000 boys, 870 in Rewari, 852 in Kurukshetra. The lowest sex ratio was registered in Mahendragarh at 841 girls per 1,000 boys.
