Delhi HC paves way for Lalit Modi’s return to India
The court has restored passport of the former IPL commissioner
New Delhi: The Delhi high court on Wednesday restored the passport of former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi.
Modi’s passport had been revoked by the Regional Passport Office, Mumbai in 2011 while he was being investigated under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema) for non-compliance with summons issued by enforcement directorate.
After Modi’s appeal before the chief passport officer failed, he filed a petition in the Delhi high court against the revocation but it was dismissed by a single judge of the high court.
Setting aside the decision of the single judge, the division bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Vibhu Bakhru also clarified that it had “not expressed any opinion with regard to the alleged Fema violations on the part of the appellant (Modi) which are being examined separately by the authorities under Fema".
Modi is presently in the UK and as a result of the revocation had been unable to travel to countries outside of the UK.
