KUALA LUMPUR: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on January 31 was to brief Malaysian Premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on his new Middle East peace initiative, the foreign ministry said here.
Musharraf is making brief visits to Malaysia and Indonesia this week, shortly after announcing that he had struck an agreement with five Arab leaders to develop a Muslim peace initiative for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Malaysia’s foreign ministry said Musharraf will tell Abdullah about the outcome of his talks with the leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the United Arab Emirates.
“The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on the situation in Palestine and Lebanon and how non-Arab OIC member countries could play a more visible role in revitalising the Middle East peace process," it said.Malaysia is the current chair of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the world’s largest grouping of Muslim nations.
After an evening meeting in Malaysia’s administrative capital of Putrajaya, Abdullah will host a dinner for the Pakistani leader who is accompanied by Foreign Minister Kurshid Kasuri and other senior officials.Malaysia and Pakistan will commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations this year.
The two countries are negotiating a free trade agreement which is expected to be concluded soon, the state Bernama news agency said. The pact will be the first Malaysia signs with another OIC member country.
