New Delhi: Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee remained the top newsmaker for the second month in a row from among Mint’s 20-member group of influencers in June as he prepared for his first Budget presentation in a quarter century.
Companies and consumers, financial markets and foreign investors, all were eager last month to hear Mukherjee’s views on the economy for the signals they sent about the first Budget of the United Progressive Alliance’s second stint in power. With 173 citations in the global media and 726 in the Indian media, he was the most quoted Indian last month by a long shot.

Investors who had hoped that Mukherjee would lay down a road map for stake sales and move towards liberalizing the financial sector further were left disappointed by the big-spending Budget he unveiled on 6 July.
The markets gave the thumbs-down for the fiscal package, but Mukherjee seems set to remain the most watched Indian public figure as goes about the task of accelerating economic growth and reinforcing the confidence of investors and consumers in the months ahead.

The Mint Influencers’ Index is a monthly, objective measure based on media analysis by Dow Jones Insight, which traces these leaders, looking at the volume of media citations for each of them as a proxy for their rising or waning influence.
The assumption is that visibility and share of voice is good for them and their companies and, in the case of global media, collectively the index is a good surrogate for the growing or waning interest in India.
