New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi turned 46 on Sunday. Gandhi’s 46th year could also be a defining year of his political career—the Congress party wants to come back to power in Punjab after a decade, play a decisive role in Uttar Pradesh, wrest Goa from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and retain Uttarakhand after a mutiny by party leaders.

Aimed at putting the Congress party on a sound footing two years before the Karnataka assembly elections in May 2018, the Karnataka government went in for a major revamp on Sunday, sacking 14 out of the 34 sitting ministers.

In other news, days before a crucial meeting of the exclusive Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to consider India’s application for membership, foreign minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday struck an optimistic note on the country’s chances of becoming a member of the bloc, saying she was sure of persuading China to support India’s bid.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah sacks 14 ministers, inducts 13 in cabinet revamp

The Karnataka government went in for a major revamp on Sunday, sacking 14 out of the 34 sitting ministers. The evening also saw the swearing-in ceremony of 13 replacement ministers at the Raj Bhavan, while wide protests erupted across the state by Congress workers and supporters of ministers who were sacked. After marathon meetings with senior Congress leaders, including party president Sonia Gandhi, over the past two days in New Delhi, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah had said the long-awaited revamp exercise would take place on Sunday. Tamil Nadu govt issues order to close 500 liquor shops

The Tamil Nadu government has issued the list of 500 liquor shops that are to be closed from Sunday. This is in continuation to an order that was signed off by chief minister J. Jayalalithaa immediately after taking oath on 23 May. The government said employees of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation affected by the closure will be transferred to other shops. Jats call off quota agitation after talks with Haryana government

The Jat quota agitation in Haryana was on Sunday called off after All India Jat Arakshan Sangarsh Samiti (AIJASS) held talks with the state government in Delhi. The decision was taken on Sunday after a marathon meeting held between AIJASS president Yashpal Malik and Haryana minister Krishan Lal Panwar in Delhi on Saturday. The dharnas were lifted before 5pm on Sunday after the government assured the agitators that their demands will be looked into within the ambit of the law. Read more
