Earlier this month, in the world’s biggest international electoral exercise, Europe voted to fill 736 seats in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The election was particularly in the news for a significant trend towards the centre-right, away from the left parties that have dominated European politics over the last few years.
On Just to Clarify, we wanted to look beyond the election to the European Parliament itself. What does this Parliament do? What can it do? How are these powers circumscribed by the individual countries that make up Europe? Who can stand in these elections? Answering these questions is Daniele Smadja, the European Commission’s ambassador to India.
