According to the latest study by United Nations Children’s Fund and the World Health Organization, around 2.5 billion people worldwide defecate in the open, of which 665 million are Indians—nearly one in four people worldwide.
Further, it found that 88% of diarrhoeal deaths worldwide was due to unsafe water and sanitation; India has the highest number of annual deaths of children due to diarrhoea at 386,000.

A review of spending by the Union government on rural drinking water and sanitation by the Accountability Initiative of the Centre for Policy Research reveals a mixed report card, particularly with respect to state-wise variations.
