New Delhi: Strong monsoon rains are expected at many places in India’s main sugarcane and oilseed regions, the weather office forecast on Wednesday.
Rains are expected in the next 48 hours and are likely to intensify thereafter in Uttar Pradesh, country’s top cane producer, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its forecast for the next five days.
Northern state of Uttar Pradesh usually accounts for more than half the country’s cane production and about a quarter of sugar output.
The IMD said in its forecast for central India, the main soybean region, that it sees “rains/thundershowers at many places over the region.”
Annual monsoon rains in India, where farmers depend on the June-September showers to irrigate 60% of their farmland, are likely to be 87% of the long-period average, threatening oilseeds and sugarcane harvests.
