Chennai:Rashtriya Janata Dal would support the candidate decided by the UPA for the Presidential elections, party MP Ganesh Prasad Singh said on 26 May,
Consultations are still on with UPA allies regarding the Presidential elections and his party would support any candidate decided by the UPA, he told reporters here.
Singh said he fully supported Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s call for constitution of a committee for Backward Communities on the lines of the SC and ST committee.
Majority of the people in North India supported reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions, he said adding a huge rally was organised in Patna in support of the demand.
A state-wide agitation would be conducted in Bihar in support of reservation for OBCs on 5 June, he said. The Constitution of India facilititated upliftment of economically and socially backward sections of society and the UPA goverment had only fulfilled its constitutional obligation, Singh said.
“Parliament, the supreme body in our democracy, has provided reservation for OBCs,” he said adding the Supreme Court should reconsider its decision and lift the stay on it.
Singh said his party leader Lalu Prasad would visit Chennai next month and address public meetings and party workers’ meetings. He said his visit to Chennai was to meet RJD workers in Tamil Nadu and to chalk out plans to strenghthen the party in the state.
