Claim Check: Jayalalithaa on crime rates in Gujarat vs Tamil Nadu

Jayalalithaa says crimes against women increased in Gujarat by 65% and declined in Tamil Nadu by 29% between 2001 and 2011 and that Gujarat recorded more incidents of communal violence

National Crime Records Bureau’s data on crimes against women shows that from 2001 to 2011, it increased by 52% in Gujarat and declined by 31% in Tamil Nadu.

Parliamentary replies by the home ministry show that between 2005 and October 2013, there were 520 incidents of communal violence in Gujarat and 260 in Tamil Nadu.
