Crime against senior citizens and children rising: NCRB
NCRB data show a total of 20,532 cases of crimes against senior citizens were recorded in 2015; for children, the number was 94,172 cases in 2015
New Delhi: Crimes against children and senior citizens in India rose 5% and 10% respectively in 2015 from a year ago, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data showed.
A total of 20,532 cases of crimes against senior citizens were recorded in 2015 compared to 18,714 in 2014. For children, the number was 94,172 cases in 2015 from 89,423 in 2014.
In Delhi, 167 out of every lakh of children were victims of crimes while the number for elderly was 107. In both categories, Delhi turned out to be the most crime-ridden state.
In terms of number of cases, Delhi stood third with a share of 10% of crimes against children and 6% against senior citizens. Nationally, there were more crimes against the elderly than against children, but in the national capital, the trend was the opposite.
Sikkim was the safest state for senior citizens in 2015, recording just three cases, while Nagaland was safest for children with 61 cases.
The incidence of crime per lakh of its population is called crime rate. Nationally, the crime rate in each category was 20. In case of crime rates against children, the figure hasn’t changed much from the previous year.
Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were other states with high crime rates against senior citizens. Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana had a share of 17%, 12% and 7% out of the total registered cases 20,532 in the country.
Among the crimes against senior citizens, murder, robbery, cheating and causing grievous hurt were most frequent.
In case of Delhi, robbery was the most frequent, with a crime rate of around 12.6, followed by cheating with a rate of around 10.7.
In case of rate of crime against children, the top five states included Mizoram, Goa, Chandigarh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, apart from Delhi. Important reasons for crimes against the children in these states were rape, kidnapping and abduction and assault on girl child with intent to outrage her modesty. In case of Delhi, the major cause was kidnapping and abduction with a crime rate of around 123 followed by rape with a crime rate of 17.
