New Delhi: Days before a proposed rally in London by a pro-Pakistan group aimed at drumming up support on the Kashmir dispute between the two countries, India on Friday dismissed the move, saying that being a country of more than a billion people, a march of a million will not overawe it.

Asked about Pakistan’s National Assembly passing a resolution a day earlier condemning the alleged “unprovoked and indiscriminate" ceasefire violations by India and seeking intervention by the United Nations to resolve the Kashmir issue, foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said it was aimed at Pakistan’s domestic audience and India opposed the option of involvement of any third party on the matter.

On the Million March slated for Sunday in London’s Trafalgar Square to highlight the Kashmir issue, Akbaruddin said India had raised the issue with the UK earlier this month during the visit by foreign minister Sushma Swaraj.

“We discussed it with the UK and we were reassured repeatedly that the UK’s view is very clear and that it is for India and Pakistan to resolve any issue that they have by themselves," Akbaruddin said, referring to calls by Pakistan for third party intervention to find a solution to the six-decade-old Kashmir dispute.

“With that reassurance, we are quite comfortable of any march being organized, be it the so-called million march because we, as I said, are a country of a billion. Millions do not overawe us," he said.

India and Pakistan have exchanged fire along their international borders in Kashmir in recent weeks in violation of a 2003 ceasefire agreement resulting in rising tensions between the South Asian neighbours who share tense ties due their rival claims over Kashmir.

The Himalayan region has been the trigger for three of the four wars between the two countries since 1947. India believes the dispute should be sorted out by India and Pakistan, while Pakistan has sought international intervention to resolve the conflict.
