Infosys Technologies Ltd chief executive officer (CEO) K. Gopalakrishnan and Larsen and Toubro Ltd chairman and managing director (MD) A.M. Naik soared up the rankings of Indian news makers in January, while finance minister Pranab Mukherjee continued to occupy the top slot, leading the number of citations in both Indian and global media. ICICI Bank Ltd CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar, HDFC Bank Ltd MD Aditya Puri and Wipro Ltd chairman Azim Premji were among those who improved their rankings in Mint’s 20-member group of influencers last month vis-a-vis December. But Tata group chairman Ratan Tata and former telecom minister A. Raja saw their rankings fall.

The Mint Influencers Index is a monthly objective measure based on media analysis by Dow Jones Insight, which tracks these leaders, looking at the volume of media citings for each of them as a proxy for their rising or waning influence. The assumption is that visibility and share of voice is good for them and their companies. In the case of global media, the index is collectively a surrogate for the growing or waning interest in India.
